Focus on In Vitro Diagnostic

MEDICA was the right place  to meet: companies developing products, raw materials or services for In Vitro Diagnostic (IVD), distributors. Sales and marketing managers as well as researchers were present on the booths.

With 132 000 visits in 4 days event for MEDICA & COMPAMED, 3 halls out of 18  were focusing on IVD. Around 800 IVD companies were exhibiting, coming mainly from Germany (245 companies) and the US (116 companies).

In Europe, the UK pavilion was hosting 62 exhibitors, the French pavilion only presented 35 exhibitors, the Belgium Pavilion had 28 exhibitors. The Scandinavian countries also had a low representation with only 35 exhibitors in total.

In Asia- Pacific, the Korean companies were leading with 40 exhibitors, while Japanese companies were following with only 16 companies. And companies from Australia and New Zeland were almost not presented.

Despite a high market potential, the BRICS presence was still shy and was led by India (23 companies), followed by China (12 companies), Brazil (6 companies), Russia (3 companies).

Innovation in IVD

Innovation in IVD was not easy to detect. Few suppliers propose multiplex assays to detect proteins: Randox, Mikrogen, Theradiag… The next revolution might come from a Swedish research laboratory (Acreo Swedish ICT research institute in collaboration with The Biosensors and Bioelectronics center at Linköping University) with an integrated biosensor using electrically conductive ink, with a cost estimate around 0.5 euros /test for larger production.       The prototype has been developed for Self-monitoring Blood Glucose (SMBG) but could be adapted to other area: cancer, heart disease, infectious disease … and the concept is waiting for partners for industrialization.
