As of June 2017, the US FDA has already approved 23 new drugs surpassing 2016’s overall approval of 22. The US regulator has approved 12 new drugs in the first three months, more than any other first quarter in recent years.

The 2016 approval tally was a major slowdown from 2014 and 2015 when the agency approved 41 and 45 new drugs respectively.
