SPECIAL REPORT #26
Scott Gottlieb, the former FDA Commissioner, joins the Board of Pfizer
Just 85 days after resigning, on April 5, from its position as US FDA Commissioner, Scott Gottlieb joins the Board of Pfizer as a non-executive director. Dr. Gottlieb will also serve on Pfizer board's regulatory and compliance committee and its science and technology committee. Pfizer Executive Chairman Ian Read said Scott Gottlieb’s “expertise in health care, public policy and the industry will be an asset to our company and enable our shareholders to continue to benefit from a board representing a balance of experience, competencies and perspectives.”
When Scott Gottlieb announced its resignation back in March, he said he wanted to spend more time with his family (Special Report #12). In a letter to colleagues, Gottlieb wrote that “there’s nothing that could pull me away from this role other than the challenge of being apart from my family for these past two years and missing my wife and two young children."
On May 22, New Enterprise Associates Inc, (NEA) a US leading venture capital firm healthcare investment and think tank, announced the appointment of Scott Gottlieb as a special partner joining the team. Scott Gottlieb was a venture partner at NEA from 2007 to 2017 before being appointed aa Commissioner of the US FDA, where he served from 2017 until April 2019. “We are thrilled to have Scott rejoin NEA, this time as a full-time investing partner” said David Mott, General Partner and Head of Healthcare investing at NEA.
While the two new roles surely are not as demanding as US FDA commissioner, Scott Gottlieb’s quick jump back to industry and venture capitalism is expected to raise eyebrows by the healthcare community.
